Southwest Airlines Takes Flight in Sonoma County with Celebratory Inaugural Arrival at STS
Sonoma County reached a new milestone in regional connectivity on April 7 as Southwest Airlines officially launched service at Charles M. Schulz – Sonoma County Airport (STS). The inaugural flight was welcomed with a festive, community-centered celebration that underscored the significance of expanded air service for the region’s economy, accessibility, and future growth.
The day’s events began at Kendall-Jackson Wine Estate & Gardens, where local leaders, business professionals, and regional partners gathered for a Southwest Airlines Community Breakfast. The welcome reception brought together key stakeholders for a morning of connection and appreciation, featuring remarks from Mark Stapp, City of Santa Rosa Mayor, Ananda Sweet, CEO of the Santa Rosa Metro Chamber, and Claudia Vecchio, CEO of Sonoma County Tourism.
Following the opening remarks, attendees participated in a fireside chat with Andrew Watterson, Chief Operating Officer of Southwest Airlines. Watterson shared insights into the airline’s expansion strategy and expressed enthusiasm about entering the Northern California market, highlighting Sonoma County as a valuable addition to the airline’s growing network.
Later that day, the excitement continued on the runway at STS, where community members and leaders gathered to greet the inaugural flight. Passengers were welcomed with cheers, a ribbon cutting ceremony, and a special appearance by Snoopy, a nod to the airport’s namesake and beloved local icon. Arriving visitors were also greeted with curated gift bags from Sonoma County Tourism, offering a warm introduction to the region.
The addition of Southwest Airlines marks a significant step forward in enhancing travel options to and from Sonoma County. The new service includes daily flights to San Diego and Las Vegas, flights to Burbank five days per week, and seasonal Saturday service to Denver.
Southwest joins Alaska Airlines and American Airlines at STS, further strengthening the airport’s roster of carriers and expanding nonstop access to destinations including Dallas, Los Angeles, Palm Springs, Orange County, Seattle, Phoenix, and Portland.
