Program Report: Student Success Through the Mike Hauser Academy
The Chamber has released a program report for the Mike Hauser Academy for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), which served 130 Sonoma County students from six school districts in 2018. The report details program highlights, student quotes, findings from post-Academy surveys, and the success story of 2009 Academy Alumnus Nikko Mendoza.
The surveys were designed to gain an understanding of students’ perceptions and attitudes toward math and science in education, confidence with science and math, and interest in pursuing STEM majors and careers. Notable survey results include 96% of students saying their Academy experience was beneficial and 93% would recommend this summer session to a friend. Post-Academy survey results also showed the highest career interest ratings in the fields of engineering and health care.
With respect to long-term program success, it’s no exaggeration to say that the Mike Hauser Academy created a rocket scientist—at least if you ask recent college grad and Mike Hauser Academy Alumnus Nikko Mendoza. In June 2018, Nikko graduated from UC Davis with a degree in Aerospace Science & Engineering, an educational path and career trajectory that he fully attributes to his participation in the 2009 Academy. ...view the full report [PDF]
Our Mike Hauser Academy convenes students, businesses and teachers, empowering our future workforce to become leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Through this three week program, students get the opportunity to visit various STEM related companies where they interact with engineers and professionals, observe demonstrations, and participate in direct learning experiences and practical applications for STEM concepts.
The Academy is a collaborative effort to increase academic achievement and inspire students to pursue their dreams. If your business is in the STEM fields and would like to host a class in 2019, take a look at the partner brochure [PDF] and please let us know.
