Preparing for SMART Commute Solutions
In preparation for SMART train service beginning later this year, SMART has started system-wide testing along the initial 43-mile route, from the northern part of Santa Rosa to downtown San Rafael. This testing includes running trains, operating railroad crossing gates at intersections and verifying that train control and communications systems are accurate and working effectively. (more information on SMART testing)
SMART also recently received federal environmental clearance for a 36-mile portion of the bicycle and pedestrian pathway between the San Rafael Civic Center Station and the Santa Rosa North Station. This clearance is one of the most significant environmental approvals to advance bicycle and pedestrian projects in the Bay Area.
The Chamber’s Transportation Task Force continues to work on last-mile solutions with major employers in the area, coordinating with businesses to determine ridership needs and working directly with SMART on potential employer-provided shuttle service.
