One Step Closer to Downtown Action
On Tuesday evening, the Santa Rosa City Council unanimously passed an ordinance that allows for the creation of community benefit districts in Santa Rosa. It’s a big milestone for the Downtown Action Organization (DAO), which moved one step closer in their ability to fund a variety of initiatives critical to the vitality of downtown and strengthening the destination’s attractiveness to both tourists and residents.
“It’s progress toward creating a district that can ensure downtown is inviting, safe, clean and beautiful – a dynamic, vibrant centerpiece for the whole community and an ideal place to do business,” says Hugh Futrell, developer and DAO board member.
While the primary focus is on downtown, this ordinance opens the door to other districts being created in areas like Railroad Square. Having community benefit districts in both areas would allow them to collaborate on joint programming and leverage each other’s efforts to enhance the overall vitality these areas.
The Chamber is here to support the Downtown Action Organization in its efforts. And after more than a year of planning and laying the groundwork, the time for action has arrived. Next steps for the DAO will include following through with the management plan and working with property owners to secure formal support to establish the district.
