Film Santa Rosa Initiative Launches with Bay Area Film Mixer
The City of Santa Rosa recently launched its new Film Santa Rosa initiative with a lively kickoff event at La Rosa Tequileria & Grille, where filmmakers, producers, creatives, and industry professionals gathered for Bay Area Film Mixer | North. The event marked an exciting first step in strengthening Santa Rosa’s presence as a welcoming destination for film and media production.
Hosted in the heart of downtown, the mixer brought together members of the regional film community for an evening of connection, collaboration, and conversation about the opportunities ahead for filmmaking in Sonoma County. From writers and directors to actors and production crews, and even SAG-AFTRA, the room was filled with creative energy and shared excitement about Santa Rosa’s growing role in Northern California’s film ecosystem.
Supporting Filmmaking in Santa Rosa
The new Film Santa Rosa initiative is designed to make Santa Rosa an even more attractive location for film productions of all sizes. Through coordinated support from the City’s Arts & Culture team, filmmakers can access guidance on permits, location scouting, city services, and connections to local businesses and resources that help productions run smoothly.
Santa Rosa offers filmmakers a diverse range of settings within minutes of each other — from vibrant downtown streets and historic neighborhoods to art-filled districts and scenic natural landscapes. With more than 1,000 acres of parkland and civic spaces, along with a welcoming community that values creativity, the city provides an inspiring backdrop for storytelling.
A Natural Fit for the Big Screen
Santa Rosa is no stranger to the spotlight. The city and surrounding region have long attracted filmmakers thanks to the scenic beauty, unique architecture, and classic small-town charm. Over the decades, productions have filmed in iconic local locations such as Historic Railroad Square, Santa Rosa Junior College, and the McDonald neighborhood, helping cement Santa Rosa’s reputation as a cinematic setting.
The launch of Film Santa Rosa builds on this legacy while creating new, streamlined pathways for filmmakers to bring their projects to life here.
A Win for the Local Economy
Film production brings more than cameras and cast members, it brings meaningful economic impact. Crews rely on local hotels, restaurants, caterers, event venues, equipment providers, and transportation services while they are in town. Each production represents an opportunity to support small businesses and showcase Santa Rosa to audiences around the world.
The Santa Rosa Metro Chamber is proud to support this initiative and looks forward to collaborating with the City and creative partners to help productions connect with the many businesses that make Santa Rosa an exceptional place to film.
Through the Chamber’s destination marketing organization, Visit Santa Rosa, the region is ready to welcome film crews and introduce them to the local partners, accommodations, meeting spaces, and leisure experiences that make filming here both seamless and memorable.
