Courthouse Square Reunification Update

Construction to reunify Old Courthouse Square is progressing quickly. Demolition is now complete, and underground work continues for electrical, telecom and irrigation. But due to a redesign and expansion of the electrical facilities, the projected completion date has been moved to mid-December.

The delay reflects an uncertain procurement timeline for components such as specialized street lights that feature individual electrical outlets as well the installation of a larger electrical transformer to accommodate electrical loads.

The delay will unfortunately impact the Winter Lights downtown tree lighting celebration, the free community event which traditionally takes place the day after Thanksgiving in Courthouse Square. The event’s planning committee is working with city staff to identify an alternative site for this year’s downtown tree lighting on November 25th.

While some things change, others stay the same: the one-way streets that will be rebuilt during the project have a new, old name. The project’s master plan provisionally named the streets Hinton and Exchange, but just this week the Santa Rosa City Council unanimously decided that they will simply remain Old Courthouse Square.
