Chamber CEO Encourages City Quality of Life Enforcement

At the Tuesday City Council meeting, Chamber President Jonathan Coe encouraged the Council to enforce the "quality of life" ordinances already on the City's books. At the Council's Study Session, Coe spoke about the proliferation of behaviors specifically prohibited in the City Code – behaviors such as aggressive panhandling, public urination, graffiti, and blocking sidewalks among others – and how these quality of life issues are impacting the entire City.

"We have expectations about behavior, and the city already has on the books the ordinances and the means to enforce them," Coe said. "From the Chamber's perspective, we'd like to ensure they are utilized."

In addressing enforcement, Coe was referencing the City's ability to enforce violations as misdemeanors which carry more significant penalties and options for police than the current practice of handling them as infractions. He also indicated the Chamber’s support for increased funding should that be needed to support such enforcement.
