Santa Rosa Youth Orchestra trumpet player will play Carnegie Hall

Santa Rosa Youth Orchestra trumpet player David Green has been accepted to the National Youth Orchestra 2 (NYO2) by Carnegie Hall and its Weill Music Institute for the 2017 season. Fifteen-year-old Green is one of only four trumpet players nationwide who were selected for this year’s program.

Green has come up through the ranks in Santa Rosa Symphony’s Youth Ensembles, beginning in the Preperatory Orchestra at 10 years of age, Repertory Orchestra at 12 and joining the SRS Youth Orchestra in 2015. He studies with Daniel-Gianola Norris, SRSYO Brass Coach and Principal Trumpet Doug Morton.

SRS Director of Education Wendy Cilman says, “David is so deserving of this honor. Not only is he a terrific trumpet player, he is a wonderful person. They chose an outstanding young musician.”

This is Green’s second time receiving this honor. Last year, he was among the three youngest members. His selection is more amazing in light of the fact that he had just changed his embouchure, so was in the middle of a technique change when he was selected.

“I was super honored and excited, because last year was amazing,” says Green. Last year, the group played in the Kimmel Center’s Verizon Hall with The Philadelphia Orchestra, but this year the program, which runs from July 1 to July 22, has the NYO2 playing Verizon Hall with the Philadelphia Orchestra again and culminates with a NYO2 performance at Carnegie Hall.

When asked about his post high school graduation plans, Green said he wished to enroll in a music school or college as a performance major. His ultimate goal is to be principal trumpet for the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
