Museum of Sonoma County Presents 31st Annual Artistry in Wood Exhibition
For thirty-one years, the Museum of Sonoma County and the Sonoma County Woodworkers Association (SCWA) have collaborated to present Artistry in Wood, a major showcase of fine regional craftsmanship. Over the years, Artistry in Wood has evolved from a modest exhibition featuring the work of local woodworkers, into something greater. While firmly grounded in Sonoma County, Artistry in Wood has developed a broader reputation, drawing participants from across the state, and is becoming one of the most respected annual exhibitions of woodwork in North America. The 31st Annual Artistry in Wood opens November 23, 2019, and runs through January 12, 2020, with an opening reception on the evening of November 22.
Works accepted for exhibition must pass stringent criteria established by a board of jurors. Those accepted are judged by a non-member panel of experts that awards prizes to the finest pieces in each of several categories including furniture, turnery, and artwork. Awards of Excellence and Best of Show are coveted prizes that reflect the highest quality of artistry and craftsmanship.
Artistry in Wood is currently the only annual woodworking show that is held in a museum. The first Artistry in Wood show held at the Museum of Sonoma County was in 1988 with about forty pieces displayed in a six-week exhibit. Last year’s exhibition featured over 65 works.
“This will be my third year as chairperson of the show,” says Don Jereb, SCWA Show Chair. “It has been an honor and pleasure to be part of this annual display of fine woodworking.” Jereb believes that visitors will come away with a “new or enhanced appreciation for the beauty of wood, the artistic skills of the woodworking craftsmen and artists, and the varied possibilities within this medium.”
