Learn New Job Skills, Free With Your Library
Whether you're looking for a new career or your first job, Sonoma County Library has you covered. The library recently added four more eResources to improve job and technology skills, courtesy of the California State Library. These resources are in addition to the online learning platforms Sonoma County Library already offers.
“We are delighted to offer more online resources to help job seekers strengthen their skills and aid in the community’s recovery from the pandemic. There is something here for everyone,” said Sonoma County Library Collection Services Division Manager Jaime Anderson. “Discover new hobbies and explore creative interests–from yoga classes for seniors, to technology and science courses, painting, drawing and sewing classes, personal development topics, culinary skills and more.”
Learn about the specific resources below:
- Coursera partners with more than 200 leading universities and companies to bring flexible job-relevant online learning to individuals and organizations worldwide. Coursera offers a range of learning opportunities—from hands-on projects and courses to job-ready certificates and degree programs.
- GetSetUp is a resource created for older adults (over the age of 55) to learn new skills, connect with others and unlock new life experiences. Class types available are digital learning, physical health, mental health, social interest and vocational classes. Most classes are live, last one hour and are taught by older adults.
- Northstar is a set of online, self-guided modules used to test computer and technology skills. Included are basic computer digital literacy standards and modules in three main areas: essential computer skills, essential software skills and using technology in daily life.
- Skillshare is an online learning community with thousands of inspiring classes for creative and curious people. Skillshare classes include a combination of video lessons and a class project. Most classes are under 60 minutes with short lessons to fit any schedule. There are thousands of inspiring classes on topics including illustration, design, photography, video, freelancing and more.
“These are valuable resources for all Californians –and a good value investment of taxpayer dollars,” said Greg Lucas, California State Librarian. “During the pandemic, Californians entered their local libraries through the digital rather than the physical front door. These skill-building, self-improvement platforms are exactly the kind of thing they should be finding at their public libraries.”
