Kicking Off Our 10th Anniversary Season Follow the Yellow Brick Road to 6th Street!
To kick off our 10th Anniversary Season 6th Street Playhouse proudly presents the beloved MGM musical, The Wizard of Oz. We couldn’t be more proud that over the last ten years 6th Street Playhouse has grown to become the premiere performing arts theatre in Sonoma County; engaging, entertaining and inspiring our diverse community. Yet, some may ask “Why another Wizard of Oz?“. Executive Artistic Director Craig A. Miller answers,
“For me, The Wizard of Oz not only offers the opportunity for, but demands a heavy directorial and design hand. It is a great message and told with great music – that doesn’t change – but how we are able to visually tell a story, taking what is proven, and even seemingly dated or tired, feel fresh (through scenic, costumes, lighting, and sound innovation – and even a new idea about character physicallity) is what is exciting to me! Our director, Ben Stowe, and his cast and staff have done just that – taking what we know, and making us see it as new.“
The classic musical is brought to life onstage with all of the songs you know and love including “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, “If I Only Had a Brain (Heart, The Nerve)”, “Follow the Yellow Brick Road” and new favorites!
The show stars Katie Kelly Stowe (Laura in last season’s The Glass Menagerie) as Dorothy and Playhouse favorites Saskia Baur as The Scarecrow, Dana Nelson Isaacs as The Lion, and Kim Williams as The TinMan. Director Ben Stowe wanted women to play the three companions to provide new insight into just who these three really are in Dorothy’s mind. At the end of her journey Dorothy learns just how magical friendship can be and how wonderful it can feel to go home again.
The Wizard of Oz is directed by Benjamin Stowe with musical direction by Roberto Acevedo and choreography by Areyla Faeron Moss-Maguire . Performances run August 21st through September 20th in the 6th Street Playhouse G.K. Hardt Theatre. Tickets range from $15 to $32 and are available online or at the box office at 52 West 6th Street in Santa Rosa. Visit www.6thstreetplayhouse.com or call (707) 523-4185 x1 for more information.
