Habitat for Humanity Helps Aging Senior in Sonoma

When Habitat for Humanity of Sonoma County heard about Irma Castillo’s Broadway home in Sonoma from Patricia Shults they wanted to help.

Habitat, with the help of Sonoma Chamber of Commerce and St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, have joined this community effort led by contractor David Dinkinis. Bank of America is holding a Corporate Build Day on September 29th to assist with rebuilding Irma’s deck, and regular volunteer work will continue Tuesdays through Saturdays until the project is complete.

“I had previous experience with Habitat in another area and wanted to learn more about what Sonoma County was doing. In July, I met with Tamara Stanley and learned about the unique projects Habitat is initiating throughout the region. When the Sonoma Index-Tribune recently reported on the progress on Irma’s house, I thought Habitat might be just the community partner to come in and get the project completed, and immediately connected Habitat to David,” according to Shults. “The Chamber is also excited to assist with the volunteer training Habitat provides so our locals will have an opportunity to assist on this project and hopefully many more!”

Habitat for Humanity of Sonoma County’s Home Repair Program preserves affordable homeownership and revives neighborhoods. Volunteers and skilled construction staff make repairs to alleviate health and safety issues and improve the quality of a homeowner’s life. Habitat's Home Repair program enables a homeowner to stay in their home and revitalizes their neighborhood by preserving the home's integrity. By participating in repairs through “sweat equity” volunteer hours, homeowners improve their homes with pride and be empowered to maintain their home long after repairs are completed.

In order to qualify for our home repair services, homeowners must:
• Own and occupy a home in Sonoma County
• Have a household income below 80% of Area Median Income
