Schools of Hope is an early intervention model for children who are struggling with reading. Volunteer tutors spend 30 minutes per week tutoring a 1st or 2nd grade student in Sonoma County including schools in: Cloverdale, Cotati, Geyserville (NEW!), Guerneville, Forestville, Petaluma, Santa Rosa, Sonoma, and Windsor (NEW!).
Education is a one of the three key building blocks United Way recognizes must be in place for individual and community success. It is essential for finding and keeping a job with a livable wage and health benefits, and reading is not only a cornerstone of education but also vital for mastering the skills necessary to thrive. Currently, 49% of our area’s 3rd graders are reading below grade level, and United Way along with its partnering local school districts and community organizations have a goal to see 90% of these students reading at or above grade level by 2020.
