Santa Rosa Young Professionals Network is proud to present - Professional Development Day, a half-day conference designed to provide inspiring and relevant content to young professionals on the topic of leadership. The purpose of YPN is to develop the next generation of community and business leaders in Sonoma County – to reflect that, our speakers are local leaders with insight into what makes this area unique, and how young professionals in our community can hone their leadership skills to achieve results.

Dr. John Stayton creates, builds and grows innovative educational programs and initiatives. He currently serves as Executive Director of Graduate and Executive Programs in Sonoma State’s School of Business and Economics, where he is responsible for the Sonoma MBA, Sonoma Executive MBA, Sonoma MBA in Wine Business, and Sonoma Executive MBA in Wine Business programs.
In the late 1990s, John desired to leverage his backgrounds in high-tech industrial business development and organic farming by developing a profession that would serve the environment and society. In 2000, he cofounded the world’s first graduate program in sustainable business that, in 2002, became known as the Green MBA. John directed the Green MBA at Dominican University of California until 2009 and grew enrollment to 130 students.
In 2010, John cofounded the Venture Greenhouse at Dominican and served as its Director until 2013, when he joined Sonoma State. The Venture Greenhouse provided facilities and services to innovative, scalable, sustainable ventures from diverse industries.
In addition to his work at Sonoma State University, John was a Visiting Professor teaching about Sustainable Business for the International MBA program at Thammasat University in Bangkok, Thailand, from 2011 until 2016. In 2017, he consulted with Holy Angel University in The Philippines, assisting them in developing the first Green MBA program in the ASEAN region.
John received his doctorate in Innovation and Technology from Grenoble Ecole de Management in Grenoble, France. John and his wife Ana own and reside at Golden Nectar Farm, an organic fruit farm near Windsor, CA.
Sally has devoted her career to working with visionaries. She worked closely with Francis Ford Coppola to develop one of the largest Direct-to-Consumer businesses in the wine industry. By creating strategies for the iconic film director, Francis Ford Coppola Winery became an award-winning winery, changing the face of wine country. Sally’s career spans to Seventh Avenue in New York City, where she worked with visionaries like Carolina Herrera, and to the Bay Area of California, where she transformed the visions of business owners to accelerate their growth. She is an author, an entrepreneur, and the founder of Inner Compass Consulting, a company that transforms Big Ideas into success for visionaries in the Wine and Food & Beverage industries. She holds an MA in Integral Psychology, and is proud to serve on the Boards of the Metro Chamber of Commerce in Santa Rosa, the Concierge Alliance of Napa Valley and Sonoma, and the YWCA of Sonoma County.
Supervisor James Gore
James Gore is a passionate public servant and Sonoma County native. Born in Healdsburg and raised throughout the 4th District, James is 6th generation Californian whose passions drive towards building a vibrant and resilient future for his community, his neighbors, and his family.
Prior to his election to Supervisor, James Gore served as the Assistant Chief of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA’s) Natural Resources Conservation Service, a Presidential Appointment position where he led nationwide conservation efforts at the intersection of agriculture, business, and the environment. Of personal note, he ardently led efforts to expand services in persistent poverty areas with underserved communities. This work took him across the country and into some of the most disadvantaged areas of the U.S., including the Colonias along the Mexican Border, the Mississippi Delta region in the deep south, and tribal reservations from Alaska to Florida.
Whether at the local, regional and statewide level, James leads campaigns to build healthy communities, environments, and economies.
Mr. Guhin has over 15 years of experience in the public sector, and is currently the Assistant City Manager and Director of Planning and Economic Development for the City of Santa Rosa. In addition to the Assistant City Manager duties, Mr. Guhin’s responsibilities include the City’s Planning, Building, Engineering and Economic Development functions. Mr. Guhin has established ongoing process improvement implementations to expedite and enhance the development process, guided the development of the City’s Housing Action Plan, lead the development of the City’s comprehensive cannabis policy and tax initiatives, oversaw the Roseland Annexation process, and is developing an aggressive downtown housing initiative to encourage multi-family housing in the downtown core to support transit oriented development and the health and economic vitality of our downtown. Mr. Guhin holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and is currently in a Master’s Degree program at Sonoma State and is a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of California.
Senator Mike McGuire
Senator Mike McGuire is a third generation Northern Californian, whose family farmed prunes and grapes in the Alexander Valley for nearly a half century. Raised by his mom and grandma, Mike worked his way through high school and college and enjoyed a career in the radio and television industries.
Mike was first elected to the Healdsburg School Board when he was 19. As one of Northern California’s youngest school board presidents, he led successful efforts to rebuild local decaying schools.
In 2004, Mike was elected to the Healdsburg City Council where he was the city’s youngest mayor and was instrumental in creating one of the most successful local economies and stable municipal budgets in the region.
In 2010, Mike was elected to the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors. He has been a tireless advocate for our environment, and helped lead efforts that turned years of deficits into a multi-million dollar surplus and made Sonoma County one of top counties in job growth in California.
Mike has always been a tireless advocate for our environment. He has helped protect and preserve tens of tens of thousands of acres of open space, watersheds and coast and he successfully fought to keep our regional and state parks open to the public.
Mike was sworn into office on December 1st, 2014, and represents the Second Senate District, which stretches from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Oregon Border. The district includes Del Norte, Trinity, Humboldt, Lake, Mendocino, Sonoma and Marin counties.
Mike attended Santa Rosa Junior College and graduated from Sonoma State University. He is married to local high school teacher and middle school assistant-principal, Erika McGuire. Erika and Mike live in Healdsburg.
